COMPANY — PATINAFOLD
A Record That Belongs to Your Family
Patinafold was set up to give families in Perak a methodical, unhurried way to work through the papers they have accumulated across generations — without the pressure of professional proceedings.
← Back to Home— OUR STORY
How Patinafold Came to Be
Patinafold began in Ipoh with a practical observation: families in Perak often have substantial collections of papers — land records, correspondence, identity documents, photographs, deeds — accumulated over two or three generations, and no straightforward way to make sense of them.
Many of these families were approaching professional engagements — an estate settlement, a property transfer, a family dispute resolution — and arriving unprepared. Not because the documents were absent, but because they were undated, unlabelled, and scattered across different boxes in different homes.
The founders of Patinafold had backgrounds in archival practice and document management, and they saw that a clerical, educational intervention — well before any professional engagement — would help families arrive better organised. The name itself reflects this: a patina is what accumulates on a surface over time, and a fold is both a crease in paper and a place where things are kept. Patinafold works with what time has left on paper.
Since opening in Ipoh, the practice has grown through referrals — families who completed one programme recommending Patinafold to siblings or cousins facing similar questions. All work remains educational and clerical; no legal or financial advice has ever been offered, and that boundary is a deliberate part of what Patinafold is.
— OUR MISSION
Why We Work the Way We Do
Every decision Patinafold makes about how to run its programmes comes from a single principle: the archive belongs to the family, and the family should understand it.
Staying Inside Our Scope
We teach dating method, labelling practice, and organisation structure. We do not value, advise, interpret, or act in anyone's name. That line matters, and we hold it in every session.
Working at the Family's Pace
Papers accumulated over decades are not sorted in an afternoon. Our programmes are designed around multiple appointments, with time between sessions for families to locate further materials or consider what they have seen.
No Copies Retained
Digital mirrors go to storage the family already controls. Physical papers leave with the family at the end of each session. Patinafold holds nothing beyond the day of each appointment.
— THE TEAM
The People Behind Patinafold
A small practice with a specific focus. Everyone at Patinafold works within the same educational and clerical scope.
Rajan Subramaniam
FOUNDER & LEAD PRACTITIONER
Rajan spent fifteen years in document management for a Perak legal firm before establishing Patinafold. He leads the Strata Register Programme and the Layered Archive Build, working directly with families on their holdings.
Lim Wei Ling
WORKSHOP COORDINATOR
Wei Ling designs and delivers the Dating and Labelling Workshop, drawing on her background in library science and her particular interest in the physical evidence that documents carry — paper weight, typeface development, ink characteristics.
Noraini Abdul Aziz
RECORDS CONSULTANT
Noraini handles the indexing and labelling work across the Layered Archive Build appointments and assists families with the gap lists and storage recommendations that follow. She has specific experience with Jawi-script documents from pre-independence Perak.
— WORKING STANDARDS
How We Maintain Quality
Each programme at Patinafold follows a consistent set of practices developed to protect both the papers and the families who own them.
No-Retention Protocol
Papers and scans are never held by Patinafold beyond the session date. All copies produced during a session transfer to family-controlled storage before the appointment ends.
Scope Discipline
Staff do not offer opinions on document value, legal standing, or appropriate next steps beyond the practitioner directory. If a family asks, they are directed to a registered professional.
Climate-Aware Handling
All physical paper handling follows practices appropriate to Perak's humid climate — materials are not exposed to direct sunlight during sessions, and storage recommendations reflect local temperature and moisture conditions.
Multi-Script Competence
Documents in Rumi, Jawi, and Chinese script are handled across our programmes. Dating and labelling methods are adapted to the script and document type in each case.
Privacy Handling
Family information discussed during sessions is kept confidential and is not shared with third parties. The only external referrals are to practitioners in the directory, and only at the family's request.
Documented Outputs
Every programme ends with written materials — a worksheet, a gap list, a contents page, a register, or a summary sheet, depending on the programme. Nothing is delivered verbally only.
— OUR APPROACH
Archive Organisation for Perak Families
Most families in Perak who come to Patinafold have already spent some time trying to sort through papers on their own. They have usually reached a point where the volume of material, the variety of scripts and formats, and the absence of dates on many documents have made independent progress difficult. Patinafold's role is to provide a structured method and the physical materials to support it.
The dating approach taught in the workshop draws on a set of observable characteristics that are already present on most documents — the printed letterhead of a government office, the style of a rubber stamp, the typeface of a typed deed, the handwriting conventions associated with a particular period, the postmark on an envelope, the watermark visible in good light. None of this requires equipment; it requires a method and some practice.
For families working through an inheritance situation, the Strata Register Programme is the most thorough option. It produces a dated chronology, a register of holdings, provenance notes, and a summary sheet formatted for handover to a solicitor or estate professional. The family arrives at that professional meeting with papers that are dated, indexed, and described — which typically makes the professional engagement shorter and less expensive.
Patinafold is based in Ipoh and serves families across Perak. Sessions take place at our Jalan Tun Sambanthan office, or at the family's home for the Layered Archive Build and Strata Register appointments where the volume of papers makes transport impractical. A small travel supplement applies for locations beyond central Ipoh.
