Why Families Choose Patinafold

A straightforward approach built around what the family already owns — no outside documents introduced, no opinions formed, no professional boundaries crossed.

Purely Clerical

Every step is organising, labelling, and indexing — not interpreting, not advising. The family retains full ownership of all papers and all decisions.

Evidence-Based Dating

We teach how to read what is already on the paper — postmarks, typefaces, watermarks — so the family can date their own documents using their own evidence.

Family-Controlled Storage

Digital mirrors go to storage accounts the family already holds. Nothing is kept on Patinafold systems beyond the session itself.

Humidity-Aware Guidance

Storage notes reflect conditions typical in Perak — the combination of tropical humidity and paper preservation is covered in every programme.

Professional Handover Ready

The Strata Register ends with a neutral summary sheet and a Perak practitioner directory, so the family arrives at a solicitor or estate professional fully prepared.

No Outside Opinions

Patinafold never asserts what a document means, what it is worth, or how it should be used. Our role is the record; interpretation belongs to qualified professionals.

— READY WHEN YOU ARE

Common Questions

Straightforward answers to the things families most often ask before getting in touch.

What does "educational only" mean in practice?
It means our workshops and programmes teach you how to work with your own documents using methods that archivists and historians use. We do not tell you what a document is worth, whether it has legal standing, or what you should do with it. Those questions belong to qualified solicitors, estate professionals, or valuers — and we provide a directory of suitable practitioners at the end of each programme.
Do I need to bring all documents at once?
Not at all. The Dating and Labelling Workshop works well with a representative sample — a few dozen items is plenty. For the Layered Archive Build and Strata Register, we schedule two or more appointments specifically so you can bring papers in manageable batches. We also help you identify what is worth bringing versus what can be noted on a gap list.
How long does each programme take?
The Dating and Labelling Workshop is two hours in a single session. The Layered Archive Build runs across two appointments, typically spaced two to three weeks apart. The Strata Register Programme spans four months, with a monthly review each month to keep things on track without creating pressure.
Will you keep copies of our family papers?
No. Scanned copies go directly to a storage account the family already holds — a USB drive, a family Google Drive, or similar. Patinafold does not retain scans after the session. Physical papers are returned at the end of each appointment.
What do the prices include?
Each programme price covers all sessions, printed materials (worksheet, glossary, contents page, labelled dividers, bound register depending on the programme), and the practitioner directory. There are no additional fees for materials used during sessions. Travel is included for addresses within central Ipoh; a small travel supplement may apply for locations further out in Perak — we confirm this before booking.
Is this suitable for families dealing with a recent bereavement?
Yes, and it is one of the most common situations we work with. Sorting a parent's or grandparent's papers is often where families first encounter the question of what to keep and how to organise it. We work at a measured pace — there is no pressure to complete everything in one go, and we are accustomed to handling papers with care and discretion.
